Julien Adolphe Duvocelle made his debut as a portrait painter of industrialists in the North. Both symbolist and realistic, his talent was noticed and earned him a first participation in the Salon of French Artists in 1897 as well as a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 for his Portrait of my mother. This success definitively directs his career towards the art of portraiture.
